The Painting is a 2022 visual novel developed and published by Tymedust Games. The story is told from the perspective of a grieving father as he recalls the life of his deceased daughter, whom passed away tragically 10 years prior.
It is the first side story, and second entry overall, in a series of related works collectively known as The Purgatoryverse.
At less than 1000 words, the game is very short and was released as part of the itch.io O2A2 Jam of 2022. It is one of few Purgatoryverse titles that can be played in browser window format, although it is also available for PC, Mac and Linux.
Gameplay[]
Unlike other titles in The Purgatoryverse, The Painting is a kinetic novel, meaning that there's no player input besides clicking to advance the narrative.
Plot[]
A man looks back on his life and that of his deceased daughter's, chronicling her early years, upbringing and eventual departure from home. While doing so, the man looks at a wall of images, which detail various events from his daughter's life. As the story ends, the camera zooms out to reveal that his daughter is in fact Astrid, the protagonist of Pitstop in Purgatory.
